Project Educate: Pixel Art

This week is to celebrate and learn more about the art of pixels.  Pixel art is defined by deviantART as: "Pixel art drawing, using only the pencil tool, hand laying individual pixels one at a time, under high magnification." (But more on that later =))  ClefairyKid and I have put together a week of articles and events that we hope will be informative, interesting and fun.  Here is the schedule*:

I didn't see more stuff/journals/whatever about this project week... :hmm:
This has been stopped, you're having problems or you'll put the links to this project at the same time?

Just wondering. OTL

You'll have to ask ^ClefairyKid since she conducted the interview (Although I do know that sta.sh has been causing her issues in posting)

Yes yes yes yes. Pixel art isn't slapping some lines down with the binary tool when shading with the airbrush or pen tool. I wish more people would realize this. X_X

And I see this on a day where I noticed a DD categorised as Pixel Art when it's clearly tooled up to blurry hell.

The only pixel media DD I see today is in the Icons category, which means it doesn't necessarily have to be 100% pixel art. I also do not DD from that category or moderate it any longer, so any suggestions regarding it would go to ^ClefairyKid ^^;

Thankfully it's had it's category changed since I saw it earlier. If only that could be done for all the other pieces similarily mis-categorized. Have a good day. =)

Yay :D my first digital arts were pixel art cuz that's how that way old graphic program someone left on our computer like back in the 90's worked. :giggle: Especially looking forward to the digital dolls/pixel art article, since that's what I use pixel art for now but I think some of my dolls aren't really dolls but more pixel art LOL

I started with pixel art as my way of getting into digital works ^^. It's one of the most fun things ever, and a good way to learn colors.

It'll be nice to see this. I'm deeply involved in a few adoptables sites, and sadly I see rampant misconceptions that "pixel artists" are only people who splice together pokemon sprites or stuff like that. I know some highly talented pixel artists personally and it's nice to see a misunderstood genre given a spotlight.

Awesomeness! :la:

There really is a lot of misunderstanding of pixel art around here, and how the site handles it (file formats, limitations etc). Confusion, dismissal and sometimes outright abuse being thrown around. It's sad.

Question: I often see things in the pixel galleries that are stolen, and/or obviously not pixel-related at all... is it worth reporting them (as miscats)? I don't often hear of anything being done about those kinds of reports, but it really would be nice to see the galleries cleaned up...

I agree with you, I think Pixel Art is one of the categories that is affected the most with miscats. When I browse the gallery I have to dig through all the clearly miscategorized and stolen works in order to find anything acceptable. :/
I wish there were an effective way to change this but I'm kind of at a loss at how this could be achieved. Maybe engaging volunteers that would deal just with miscats would be an idea...^^

Too many legal issues with making volunteers do it; it's too close to work that you legally have to pay someone to do. That's why it's optional for us =)

Ah okay, I actually assumed that it would be more complicated to pay people for it but I guess it makes sense.^^
I just wish this really wasn't such a big problem, especially in the Pixel Art category. It's really horrible to browse there. :/

It's a labor law thing lol

It's a problem in every category, but it's more noticeable in pixel since it is a smaller category in general.

Yeah indeed. But well $Moonbeam13 told me they are looking into it and trying to find solutions for the problem so let's hope we might have a cleaner gallery soon (or cleaner galleries in general). :)

Yep. Though I wonder exactly where some of those miscats should go? Nobody seems to know where else to submit their Minecraft things (for example), and as for stolen game sprites... well, those shouldn't be anywhere. xD

Agreed, I can imagine plenty of trustworthy deviants would love to volunteer! I find it odd that only one person deals with all miscat reports. Such a lot of work for an already busy staff-person. o.O

Minecraf could go into Customization maybe? It fits better than Pixel Art I think. But I agree, some of the pieces would be hard to place anywhere but then again half of the works landing in Pixel Art shouldn't be on dA at all, just like you said. :XD:

Yeah, indeed, maybe we should somehow bring this to $Moonbeam13's attention, you can never know, she might take the suggestion. :D

Miscat reports all go to $Moonbeam13 and no one else, so they get thrown to the back burner a lot. Theft goes to the CEA team and gets dealt with way faster, so I'd stick to reporting theft personally. $Moonbeam13 is always looking for suggestions on how to better deal with miscats (it used to be a volunteer thing, but some issues came up over that, so we don't deal with reports anymore, we just move miscats as we find them/if we want to)), so if you have some ideas, shoot her a note =)

What about the file formats and limits do you mean? I'm a little confused but interested =)

Alrighty, thanks! :)

What I meant by that... well, many people don't seem aware of how GIFs are treated. The "if it's larger than 150px, you must make your own thumbnail" rule, and all that stuff.

I suppose I'm wondering about those thumbnails. How do different pixel artists show those "previews" for their work? What do people think of different kinds?

Some people have told me it's "unfair" and a "cheap trick" to show a small section of the work and the word Preview... but I thought that was the standard, what most large-scale pixellers do to give an idea of the full piece?

Ah the preview image. I get you now.

I honestly am not sure why .gif formats need that. It's always confused me. A lot of people save as .png now to get around having to make a preview image, since .png will preserve transparency and colour count. But I would have to say it isn't a cheap trick or anything, just a site requirement for submissions.

I wrote a guide to preview images the last time I ran a PE week (digital dolls) and I think that article may need to be updated and resubmitted. Here's the old one [link] if you are interested
