This was inspired by an article written a while back by Dom a.k.a. dxd news.deviantart.com/article/13…, and an article that highlighted some of the following points written by Danie, a.k.a. Moonbeam13 news.deviantart.com/article/13… informative article was written by TimberClipse that can be found here news.deviantart.com/article/14… .

I cannot speak for the CR team as a whole, but a lot of things I am typing in this article can be generalized to the rest of the team.  (And if anyone from the CR Team has anything to add, feel free to let me know =3).

So let's start off with the basics.

:bulletpurple:What is a GM?
A GM is a Gallery Moderator.  We are represented by the ^ symbol next to our usernames.  We are volunteers that take care of certain categories in dA's submission systems.  We do not get paid, unless you count being a premium member for life after our one year term is up, but that equals out to $29.67 Canadian per year or, $0.08 per day, in one year.

:bulletpurple:Who are the GMs?
A full list of the current GMs can be found here communityrelations.deviantart.… and here FAQ #18: Who selects Daily Deviations and how are they chosen?

:bulletpurple:So, what do GMs do?
We organize contests, we hold featured chats, we do interviews, we post news articles relating to our respective galleries and dA in general, we post Daily Deviations, we move miscats, we make suggestions for gallery changes (but do not implement these changes ourselves) and most importantly, we keep in touch with the members of our gallery as best we can and try to listen to their needs and ideas.  Some GMs will do all of these things, some will only do a few, and some will do none of them and spend their time as a GM in a completely different way.  None of these things are mandatory.

:bulletpurple:You mentioned DDs....
I am quoted verbatim in this article news.deviantart.com/article/13… on my views on DDs.  I have little more to say than that every GM will have different standards for featuring a DD, but that is because we all bring different views, experiences and expectations to our galleries.

:bulletpurple:If you can move miscats, how come there are so many still around?
It's a matter of numbers.  At last check there was something like 900 000 000+ submissions in the Digital Dolls gallery, a gallery that has existed for 3-4 years.  Of those, I would guess that about 899 000 000 are miscats, with more new miscats being added every day.

It just isn't possible to move them all one by one or in small groups (we are limited in the number we can move, per move).  Considering that we are all a) volunteers, b) have lives offline (I, for example, have a girl friend, several friends, am a second year university psychology major, have errands to run, have a family that likes to speak with me every now and again, art that I would like to do and the rest of my duties as a GM to attend to, the list goes on) and c) don't have the patience.  As much as I like a clean gallery, I would not want to spend weeks of my time only moving miscats.  I'd go nuts!

Also, there are not very many people with the ability/tools to move miscats, and those that have it have other volunteer duties as well as offline lives.  And not every volunteer will be familiar with every type of art; dA has over 9000 different subcategories to submit to.  I probably am familiar with 40 or so outside of the 12 that I take care of.

:bulletpurple:So what don't you do?
We do not get paid for one thing.  We do our volunteer work out of love for art, the community and the people in it.  We do not resolve help desk tickets.  We do not ban people.  We do not deal with account issues.  We do not deal with deviantwear purchases or premium memberships.  We do not write policy (or even communicate often with those that do (which would be the communityops team headed by fourteenthstar )).

:bulletpurple:So, you don't get paid, but who are you working under?  And are you accountable?
Moonbeam13 is the Director of Community Relations, which encompasses GMs.  If you have a legitimate problem with a GM that cannot be resolved with the GM, contacting Moonbeam13 politely is what you do.

:bulletpurple:So why do any of this?
Out of love for dA, the people on here, our preferred artistic media/style/genre and because we like helping.  Yes there is dArama, but usually the goods outweigh the bad.  And we're control freaks :giggle:  Kidding.  But in general, we are the people that can't help but get involved, can't help but respond to the challenge and wouldn't have it any other way.

A few things to remember:
Just because we have a ^ does not mean we are perfect.  We are all far from it because we are human and we make mistakes.  We are artists, we all love different media/genres/what have you.  We all come from different walks of life, have different experiences and different ways of being in the world.  Some of us are emotional and show it, while others never seem to present anything other than calmness and control.  But we are people and artists first; art is what brought us here and it's why we stay and lend our time to the website.

Final Words
Check out these groups and FAQs and give the volunteers on dA some love and understanding.

a very cool article but there's one very important thing you forgot to mention: How do you become a GM? Are you elected, appointed or anything else?

FAQ #85: Can I be a volunteer on deviantART? at the bottom of the article should answer that =)

You send an application and $Moonbeam13 picks the GMs from the applications. Every now and again, she suggests that certain people apply for the spot =)

Thank You for the info, it's easy to mistake some functions for the GMs' ones, now it's all much clearer :)

really sorry to bother You, but i have no idea whom to ask:
i've noticed that ^Shalora left and there is no Conceptual Photography moderator.
what are, moreless, the most general demandings to become one?
does it depend on popularity, awards, technical skills, etc.?
this category is very important to me, i can't imagine e.g. no conceptual DDs
i can look for the right person and ask Him/Her to apply,
if i know what it means to be the right person.

All you need to apply is to be over 18, have a love and knowledge for the gallery you are applying for and have the time to do the GM stuff =) Popularity and skill do not come into it at all.

Hm, okay, that is understandable, but then it makes it seem alien to anyone who is not Canadian. They should have at least in parenthesis translated it into several different currencies so that the rest of dA could understand the point they were trying to bring across.

Well, if they put it in the usual American I might have felt alienated. Either ways, you can't win 'em all. And again, it's not they but her. She used what she knew so..yeah. Sorry if you feel alienated.

I'm not so close-minded that I think only the US dollar should be represented. We also have a lot of people who use the Euro. And "they" was just a generic term so I wouldn't have to jump to conclusions about the individual's gender.

It is definitely nice to have this all written out. So many people automagically give GM's admin responsibilities and then complain when the GM's can't perform. I know some people I will be linking here so they can see it first hand from a GM.
