A Guide to the Subcategories of Fan ArtGalleries Month
Hello and welcome to the Fan Art section of the galleries description month Basically, I'm here to give you a play by play of how the Fan Art sub categories are structured and what belongs in them. On August 30th, STelari will be giving you a guide to Traditional Art and Fan Art miscategorizations and Gwendolyn12 will be giving you a guide to Anime/Manga and Fan Art miscategorizations, so I will not delve too deeply into those here. So let's delve into the wonderful world of Fan Art!
What is Fan Art?
Fan Art is the Level 1 category found on the category tree. Fan Art is currently defined as art containing copyrighted characters or concepts. This basically means art of characters, creatures, locations, items, etc that are under copyright and were NOT originally created by you. But the word concepts is also important here; characters created for a specific fandom also have a home in Fan Art, since they build on t
What is a Digital Doll? Galleries Month
As part of the gallery description month, I'm going to be introducing the Digital Dolls subcategory (and it's subcats) to all of you. This will include a brief description and a few examples from each category.
Digital Dolls is located in the Customization category. Customization is the gallery that is dedicated to forms of art that let you modify or individualize things; wallpapers to change up your desktop, avatars and icons to change your dA presence, emoticons to enhance the chat experience and digital dolls. Digital Dolls are created by customizing a base body, created by yourself or someone else, hence it's home in the Customization category.
Digital dolls traditionally had a hard pixel edge and a transparent background but dolling has deviated away from that in recent years. The transparent background used to be important for people that would adopt dolls (display them on personal web pages with a link back to the creator) so that a

A lighter conversationThe world is pretty screwed up right now and I've had a low couple of days, so I want to turn to a lighter note for this entry
First off, a thank you to everyone who commented on the A Time to Talk entry. Hearing from all of you was very interesting and heart warming
I noticed a bit of a theme in the responses, art as coping, be it someone else's art (music, movies, books, etc) or diving into making your own. It got me thinking about media and the importance of being able to relate to what we see/read/watch/hear. So I was wondering: who is the first character in a book/show/movie/play/etc that you felt able to relate to? That you went "someone out there has created something that speaks to me and my experiences". What was the first song that made you feel that way?
For me it was probably Rogue from X-Men Evolution to a certain degree; the idea of wanting to be close to people and feeling unable was very strong. I got into reading the Mystiq
July FeaturesSo between dA's birthday and recent events, the updates and features that I planned to originally publish on August 1st got pushed back a little bit But we're here now!
As one of our club members pointed out, the third season of the Sengoku Basara anime is up on youtube with English subs There's about 6 episodes out right now, so let's talk a bit*:
How are you liking the 3rd season so far?
Any predictions for future episodes?
Anyone you're excited to see get some screen time?
*Please comment with a spoiler warning if you are going to discuss major plot points
Short feature is short since we had a record low of submissions for July ;.;
A time to talkAeirmid has started a conversation surrounding depression, suicide and mental health here .
I urge anyone who wants to answer the questions in that journal to do so. I urge anyone who has the time to at least read the journal and some of the responses.
The thing I value most out of all of human interaction is the stories that we share with one another; good, bad, happy, sad, scary, disturbing, relatable, unrelatable, sharing experiences is something that helps to bring people together. Conversation is a powerful tool. I am always thankful for the stories that people share with me. And now I want to share with you.
Before I do share my experiences, I also want to say that if any of you need someone to listen, hit me up in a note. I may not reply quickly, I may not have advice but I can at least be there to hear you. I want to be a member of team you for all of you that have come to watch me over the years. I ma
Calling all Fan Artists!elclab contacted me with the following:
"Do you share or sell fanart?
Do you use characters or themes from other media in your work?
We want to learn more about how remixers, fan creators, and other artists are sharing and interacting online, especially in the context of copyright law, and we want to hear from DeviantArt!
We are offering compensation in the form of a $6 Amazon gift card for study participants!
If you would be willing to share your experiences in a one-hour interview over the phone or instant messenger, please contact lead researcher Casey Fiesler at firstname.lastname@example.org to set up an interview time."
I have participated in an interview already (because art and science coming together, how can I not? ) and can say that it was a cool experience. This study needs more participants willing to share their experiences and as long as you have Skype or some other voice chat program on your computer, you can participate It only takes 30-60 minutes
Monthly Theme VOTE and WIN POINTS:icontransparentplz:
All works here http://thefavouriteshowcase.deviantart.com/gallery/29360832
Hello dear members, watchers and visitors
This is the new way to find our winner of our monthly challenge: instead using a Poll with the ten most voted of the period, we'll be using a blog to showcase the 20 MOST VOTED on this theme!
This means, or so I hope, more exposure for your pieces and galleries.
The idea is simple: each work has a number and all deviants have the opportunity to vote like if it was a poll...with the difference that you will choose not one but 3 favourites!
All deviants may vote, INCLUSIVE who is participating; the participants may vote for themselves and ask friends and watchers to vote; this blog may have publicity by all means and be submitted in groups.
The work with most votes wins 130 points;
the second place wins 80, the 3rd place wins 50 and the 4
PE: Anime/Manga - Digital ArtGallery Month
Hello everyone! Welcome to the Anime & Manga half of this week!
Today Gwendolyn12 and me are going to explain the different categories of the Anime & Manga Gallery.
Since this Gallery has 2 different main categories the Gallery Overview is split in 2 articles.
In my article I will explain you our Digital Media category including the sub-categories. The Traditional Media category will be explained later by Gwendolyn12!
What is Anime & Manga?
Anime is based of the word Animation. These are Japanese animated productions usually featuring hand-drawn or computer animations. When you talk about an Animation in Manga style. That's Anime.
But what is Manga? With Manga you mainly mean a comic book created in Japan. But this word is used for regula

Gallery Descriptions: Traditional Art, part 1Galleries Month
Traditional Drawings and Paintings
These two subcategories of Traditional Art contain almost the same sub-galleries - the only exception is Technical Drawings in Drawings subcategory. There are many definitions to describe what paintings and drawings are and you can still add a huge "except..." at the end of each. General rule is: in drawing, you create the picture with lines, while paintings use filled shapes or surfaces. For painting, the medium is a combination of pigment and liquid (simply put), but some pictures done with dry media (such as dry pastel) can also be called paintings, following the previously mentioned definition.
Pictures focusing on the formal, non-representational aspect of imagery. They emphasize lines, colours and generalized or geometrical forms, deprived of reality and recognisable objects or beings. Very often confused with Surreal.
JULY + AUGUST: ART FEATURESThese are the featured submissions from the groups UnlimitedAnime-Manga, DrawAnimeArt and Manga-Anime-4ALL for the months of July and August! Check them out & give them love!
And please this journal so that it can reach larger audience, thus giving more exposure to the artists.

Gallery Descriptions: Traditional Art, part 2Galleries Month
This sub-gallery is for three-dimensional or two-dimensional artistic compositions, made by putting together found objects not generally thought of as art materials.
Two-dimensional works made of a combination of other forms, often including photographs, newspaper clippings, or any other type of object which can easily be glued down.
An artistic genre of three-dimensional works, that branching from sculpture, are more about the concept than the form. They are usually designed for a specific site, but can be mobile, to transform how the space is viewed.

A word on DD SuggestionsIt's already in my guidelines, but the past couple of months worth of suggestions make me think this needs to be explicitly stated. Art that used references in its creation needs to have the references credited or else I will not DD it. Since November I have received nearly 50 photorealistic fan art suggestions with no references credited. I don't want to have a blanket no to photorealistic DDs but it is obvious when a reference is used to create that realistic look and it is only fair and honest if that reference is credited. It also keeps accusations of theft and tracing down, which in turn, keeps everyone happier.
So if you see an awesome photorealistic fan art piece that you HAVE to suggest but it lists no references, can you kindly ask the artist, politely, about references before suggesting it? That way credit is given where credit is due and the chance of them getting DD increases, so everyone wins
